Why I Do This Work

I started reading tarot in my communities professionally in 2011.

This was long before most spiritual service providers were online, and I wasn’t online either!

Everything was by word of mouth. A friend told their friends, who would come and ask for a reading. Then those friends would tell their friends, and so on.

I’d been reading cards for ten years by then. I had always thought of it as something I did for friends and family, though I occasionally read at events like my college’s mini-ren faire.

I was happy to give these readings, but I figured that’s all it would be. But I couldn’t understand why people were coming to me. (I was raised in the church, so toxic humility? I know her well!) After all, couldn’t they go to the psychic shop like everyone else?

Turns out most spiritual shops and spiritual spaces more generally are unwelcoming to queer and trans people. And that’s when they’re not openly hostile to us.

They usually don’t have a lot of experience working with folks in criminalized industries, or movements for justice, or with multiple partners. Due to bias and inexperience, spiritual service providers can dole out readings that are as hurtful and fucked up as any church.

I realized then that my work wasn’t just like every other reader. This isn’t about being better at reading cards than other readers, because how could I know that? I let very few people read my cards.

My readings are better for the communities I serve.

I work with ancestors in a way that opens a respectful conversation, and work hard not to pathologize, stigmatize, or scold my clients.

Later I learned that herbalism spaces had similar problems, particularly around disability, mental illness, and the subject of medication.

Five years later, I’m proud to do my work as a trained clinical herbalist in the same spiritual and political vein as my public tarot practice.

Almost 65% of Americans identify as spiritual in some way. Nearly 40% of Black American believe that ancestral connection can improve their life.

We need spiritual service providers who can meet this moment, when fascism the order of the day.

Sad as it is, some spiritual spaces are fascist themselves.

It’s called the spirituality to alt-right pipeline, and it’s part of the reason we’re all in this predicament right now.

My work is explicitly anti-oppression, and designed to care for those I share community with in movements for justice.

When you take a class with me, get an herbalism consultation, or get a reading, you can expect a leftist point of view and a respectful environment, without sacrificing the training, quality, and experience you deserve from any spiritual service provider.
