balm in gilead is a physical and digital apothecary located in Kingston, New York, and stewarded by rootworker, clinical and community herbalist, diviner, and poet Cyrée Jarelle Johnson.
Wellness doesn’t come in isolation from our community and our ancestors. True wellness tends to our connectedness, continues relationships with the earth that our ancestors created, and shows us the part of god that lives within all of us.
At balm in gilead, we compost white supremacist, ableist beliefs about plant-centered wellness and wholeness. We turn that fertilizer into blooming gardens of rootwork, ancestral approaches to wellness, and community care.
We understand that our ancestors worked roots as a way to live long, peaceful, and prosperous lives. We honor their wisdom by applying it to our modern lives, and by preserving it to pass to future generations.
We understand that rootwork is an act of radical black futurity, and a veneration of those who built this tradition in the so-called united states after carrying it with them in the holds of ships as they were kidnapped from West Africa.
We honor George Washington Carver, Harriet Tubman, James Still, Peter the Doctor and all our rootworking, earth loving ancestors of tradition and of blood.
Their work lives on through our work. So it is.
